Pipes from Banija

Banija pipes are a very interesting instrument similar to the sopila and the roženica. This instrument has double reeds and a conical bore just like the sopila and roženica. They are also played in pairs accompanied by a drum. But they differ from the sopila and roženica because the reeds are almost identical. They are the same length and have the same position of holes (up to 10 on each pipe). The difference in the pipes is that the leading pipe uses all the holes for playing, while the accompanying pipe uses only 4-5 of the upper holes that are closed with wax. The musician plays on the remaining holes below.
